A two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Limberlost Drive and First Avenue in Tucson on Saturday, April 30 between a car and a motorcycle resulted in the death of the rider. Tucson Police reported that 53-year-old Blaine Martineau ran into a vehicle that turned in front of him. Martineau died on the way to the hospital, according to the TPD. Tucson Police said the driver of the other vehicle stopped and cooperated with the investigation.
The driver of the other vehicle did not appear to be impaired and has not yet been cited although the investigation is ongoing. According to a spokesman for the Tucson Police Department the driver failing to yield was a “major contributing factor in the collision.” Already in calendar year 2022 this is the seventh fatal motorcycle crash being investigated by the TPD. At this point in 2021 there were only four fatal motorcycle accidents.
The most common motorcycle crash occurs when a car turns left in front of a motorcycle. Statistics reveal that in excess of 40% of motorcycle fatalities happen in this manner. The raw numbers suggest fatal motorcycle accidents have almost doubled year-over-year and serious injuries have also seen a significant rise over the same time period.
Traffic in Tucson has risen along with distracted driving and when the two statistics are combined the results can turn tragic rapidly. If you ride motorcycle you must protect yourself to the greatest extent possible. Use as much safety gear and you feel comfortable with. Helmet, gloves, goggles, boots along with long pants and long sleeves. None of this equipment is fun to wear in the heat of Tucson but these items offer an increased level of protection should something happen. I also offer a level of protection should something happen.
