I’ve lived in the wonderful community of Tucson long enough to know that after the first of May summer will soon be upon us all. Summer in Arizona is not about the official calendar date of June 21, it’s much more about a string of days when the thermometer hits the high 90’s and occasionally exceeds 100 degrees. For most of us that defines the start of summer.
This is also the time of year when there will be a tragic story on the news from somewhere in Arizona a child was forgotten in a car seat by a babysitter, that includes a parent or childcare provider and the child dies due to heat exposure. The sad reality is Arizona leads the nation in this statistic with Arkansas and Oklahoma coming in a close second and third place. Almost 19% of children that die every year in this manner got into the car on their own, became trapped and die.
There is legislation pending that would require manufacturers to include technology in cars alerting parents and care givers so that they don’t accidently leave kids in the car. Until that legislation becomes law here are 5 Ways to Make Sure You Don’t Leave Your Child in the Car.
- Always Leave Your Suitcase Or Phone Next to Your Child In The Car Seat: Doing this forces you to retrieve the items next to your child when you exit the car.
- Technology: There are several car seat motion sensors available that will remind you your child is in the car.
- Consider Buying A Car With Backseat Reminder Technology: Models like the GMC Acadia, Kia Telluride and Hyundai Santa Fe have motion sensors designed to remind the driver that someone is in backseat when the car turns off.
- Get A App Child Safety App: Try the free Kars 4 Kids Safety App which sounds a customizable “Don’t Forget Your Kid” alarm when the car turns off (vehicle must have Bluetooth technology) or find another app.
- Take Your Time… Slow Down: We know life can get crazy for everyone, but whenever possible and especially when you are stressed or in a hurry, remember to take a breath and slow down. Nothing is as important as your kids.
