Did you know that a self-driving truck crashed in Tucson in April 2022? The truck that crashed wasn’t a full-size Ford truck either. The truck that crashed was a big rig that can legally weigh as much as 80,000 pounds! The truck crashed during a run from a major distribution center and a terminal on Tucson’s southeast side. The company reported the crash to the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The company says the crash occurred on April 6, 2022 in the Tucson area. The company has been testing self-driving trucks with human drivers aboard along interstate 10 since as early as 2015. The company claims a human error occurred when the operator re-engaged the autonomous driving mode without completing all of the safety steps necessary to re-engage. The is what they say led to the crash. The company claims they have upgraded all of their systems with new automated checks to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future.
Overall, between July 2021 and May 2022 NHTSA has received over 130 reports of crashes of vehicles with “automated driving systems.” A dozen of those crashes happened in Arizona the report from the NHTSA says. Waymo, a Google sister company is testing an autonomous taxi system in the Phoenix area and has had by far the most reported crashes among automated operating system equipped vehicles. During that same reporting period NHTSA also received 367 reports of crashes involving vehicles with so-called SAE level 2 automation systems. Autonomous driving is here to stay and our office is ready to help if you become a victim of this new and unproven technology.
